Integrative counselling · Telephone & online

Thoughtful therapy for complicated lives.

For people who are coping on the outside and struggling underneath.

A calm place to think clearly. Therapy can offer space to understand what is happening beneath the surface, particularly when life looks functional from the outside but feels increasingly difficult within.
Emma Barnby, integrative counsellor

About me

A different route into therapy.

Law + Tavistock + Counselling

Before becoming a counsellor, I worked as a solicitor and in demanding professional environments.

That earlier career remains relevant to the way I work today. I understand environments in which people are expected to think clearly, perform well, make difficult decisions and continue functioning regardless of what may be happening in their personal lives.

Being articulate, capable and successful does not protect somebody from anxiety, difficult relationships, grief, trauma or periods in which life becomes difficult to manage.

Sometimes it can make asking for help harder.

I subsequently trained as a counsellor and undertook postgraduate training in systemic family therapy at the Tavistock and Portman.

This has strongly influenced the way I think about relationships, families and the wider context of a person's life.

I believe that, beneath the noise and complexity of life, there is a capacity for peace within each of us.

How I work

“Not simply how to cope, but how to understand what is happening and what you want to do differently.”

01

Clarity

Make sense of thoughts, feelings and patterns that have become confusing or difficult to hold alone.

02

Relationships

Explore boundaries, responsibility, conflict, attachment and the family or relational patterns that keep repeating.

03

Change

Consider choices with greater freedom and self-trust, rather than feeling driven by fear, habit or other people’s expectations.

Relationships & family

Understanding what happens between people.

Some difficulties make more sense when we look at the wider relationship or family system around them.

Therapy can help you explore recurring patterns, difficult loyalties, responsibility for others, conflict, separation, family roles and the challenge of setting boundaries without losing connection.

What I help with

Areas we might explore together.

Anxiety & overwhelm

Persistent worry, panic, overthinking, pressure and the sense that you should be coping better than you are.

Relationships

Conflict, separation, attachment, difficult family dynamics, boundaries and repeated patterns.

Trauma & difficult experiences

Working carefully with experiences that continue to affect how you feel, relate or respond now.

Loss & transition

Bereavement, endings, identity changes, work changes, ageing and periods when life no longer feels familiar.

Self-worth & identity

Understanding whose expectations you have been living by and developing a stronger sense of your own values and choices.

Professional pressure

Stress, responsibility, perfectionism, burnout and the emotional cost of appearing highly functional.
